SUNRISE: State senate to vote today on dispensary regulations

THE GAZETTE

DENVER (AP) — Proposed regulations for medical marijuana dispensaries are up for another vote in the Colorado Senate.

Senators are expected to hold a final vote on the legislation today, a day after giving preliminary approval to the rules.

On Wednesday, senators opened the door to waiving sales tax on pot sales to some patients but made no other major changes to the bill. That makes it more likely that the House will continue to back it and that regulations will be passed before lawmakers adjourn next week.

The bill allows cities and counties to ban dispensaries and limits individual caregivers from providing marijuana to more than five people. Dispensaries would have to grow 70 percent of their own marijuana to help keep tabs on who's buying the drug.

TODAY’S WEATHER

Expect a warm but windy day today. The National Weather Service predicts a high between 66 and 76 degrees today, but winds gusts up to 50 mph. Temperatures are expected to dip into the 50s this weekend.

AROUND COLORADO

DENVER — Colorado lawmakers have agreed to tone down a bill that would hold teachers accountable for the performance of their students. Democratic sponsors said Wednesday they would amend the bill to give teachers more of a say in their careers. Teachers who have been laid off and prove that they have been effective would be given preference in rehiring.

DENVER — Guns will continue to be legal on the Colorado State University System's two campuses. The CSU Board of Governors voted Wednesday to rescind a campus gun ban, citing a Colorado Court of Appeals ruling last month that overturned a similar ban at the University of Colorado.

LONGMONT, Colo. (AP) — Longmont police say they arrested a man wanted by Mexican authorities who are investigating him for a homicide.

Police say 25-year-old Ricardo Padilla-Chavez is being held by Longmont police but that immigration authorities are expected to take him back to Mexico. Sgt. James Pitts says a Longmont officer arrested Padilla-Chavez Wednesday afternoon after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent spotted him in an SUV.

The details of the crime Padilla-Chavez is being investigated for were not immediately available. Pitts says ICE agents had been searching for Padilla-Chavez for six months.

Authorities believe he is in the U.S. illegally.
