Sandra Bullock and Betty White star in "The Proposal".

The Proposal (PG-13)

Book editor Maggie Tate (Sandra Bullock) is everyone's worst nightmare: ruthless, selfish, driven, and tactless. Tate is a humorless martinet whose staff quakes in her presence and e-mails warnings about her every move. ("The witch is on her broom.")

But when a problem with her Visa could potentially send her back to her native Canada and destroy her all-important career, she comes up with a solution on the spur of the moment: marry her much younger (but all-American) assistant (Ryan Reynolds).

He agrees to participate in the charade, but with a few conditions of his own. The unlikely couple heads to Alaska to meet his quirky family. Ma and Pa (Craig T. Nelson and Mary Steenburgen) are not what you'd expect, especially not Granny (Betty White, a hoot as always).  and the always-in-control city girl finds herself in one comedic fish-out-of-water situation after another.

With an impromptu wedding in the works and an immigration official on their tails, Margaret and Andrew reluctantly vow to stick to the plan despite the precarious consequences.
