Missing bicyclist found injured on trail
A man who went missing during a bicycle ride Wednesday night was found lying on a bike trail with incapacitating injuries near his home in north Colorado Springs on Thursday morning.
A jogger found James Nelson lying next to his bike about 10:30 a.m. Thursday after an apparent crash on a trail between Struthers Road and interstate mile marker 157, the El Paso County sheriff's office said. He lives just off Struthers Road on Pebble Crest Way.
Nelson suffered broken ribs, a fractured face and "some degree of head injury" and was sedated for treatment, spokeswoman Lt. Lari Sevene said.
He was in serious condition at St. Frances Hospital, a hospital spokesman said.
Nelson was last seen by family members about 8 p.m. Wednesday. He left his wallet and cell phone at home and is rarely out of contact for long periods, Sevene said.
The jogger's discovery ended an overnight search by sheriff's deputies, Monument police and Air Force Academy security police. The El Paso County Search and Rescue joined in the search Thursday morning.
