Police recover stolen Red Cross trailer
Colorado Springs police have recovered a trailer stolen from the American Red Cross Pikes Peak Chapter last week.
The trailer, devoted to disaster relief, was damaged and was emptied of blankets, ready-to-eat meals, coffee pots, first-aid kits, stuffed animals for kids, cots and other items used to set up emergency shelters and help the victims of fires and natural disasters. It was found abandoned Wednesday.
The thieves spray painted over the Red Cross logo and screwed 2x4s into the side of the trailer to try to disguise it , said Jennifer Mariano, director of communications. Wood on the inside of the trailer was ripped out. In all, an estimated $500 to $1,000 is needed to repair the trailer.
No arrests have been made in the theft.
The Red Cross is seeking monetary donations to repair and restock the trailer. Donations can be sent to 1040 S. 8th St., Colorado Springs, CO 80905.
