1A's backers winning battle for funding

THE GAZETTE

A political committee advocating for the passage of Question 1A on Tuesday's mail-in election ballot added $23,600 to its war chest during the past 2½ weeks.

As of Friday, the Jobs Now campaign has raised a total of $168,475, according to campaign disclosure statements filed with the Colorado Springs City Clerk's Office.

The Jobs Now campaign has dwarfed its competition on the fundraising front.

The Citizens for Cost-Effective Government, which is working to defeat 1A, has raised a total of $4,000 in this election cycle.

"I just remember that David beat Goliath," campaign manager Daniel Cole said.

"They have a lot of big donors, Wells Fargo, of course, being among them, but those donors still only get one vote," he said. "The small-business owners who don't have this sort of money to throw around each get one vote, too. In the end, we're going to be counting up those votes rather than the dollar signs."

A spokesman for the Jobs Now campaign could not be reached for comment.

Question 1A asks voters to extend a property tax that is set to expire at the end of 2009.

Opponents say it amounts to "corporate welfare," but supporters say it will generate about $3 million annually to help create jobs.
