A water main break caused a 2 block stretch of W. Uintah St. to be closed for most of the day Tuesday. The street was shut down between 17th and 19th Street causing several businesses to have to go without water on Tuesday. The break occurred just before 12 a.m. on Monday night. It is most likely the cause of a freeze-thaw cycle which can cause the pipes to expand and contract. The road is expected to reopen on Tuesday evening, February 9, 2010. TRAFFIC UPDATE: Water main break closes West Uintah at 17th Street

A water main break at the intersection of Uintah and 17th streets has shut down Uintah’s eastbound and westbound lanes in that area though this evening.

The break happened just before midnight, most likely because of shifting ground caused by freezing and thawing, according to Colorado Springs Utilities. Businesses in the area that lost water should have it back by about 3 p.m. and the intersection should be re-opened about 6 or 7 p.m., according to utilities.
