USAA moving jobs to Springs office
USAA will move 75 employees between June and September to its Colorado Springs regional office from call centers it is closing in California and Virginia, the San Antonio-based financial-services giant said Thursday.
That is just 30 percent of the "at least 250 jobs" the company said in February that it planned to add at the local office when it announced a decision to shutter offices in Sacramento, Calif., and Norfolk, Va. Half the 1,100 employees who work at the two offices accepted transfers to one of USAA's remaining offices; the rest will be laid off and receive severance packages by Sept. 30.
USAA still plans to hire at the Springs office "throughout the year, as needed, to serve our members," said Roger Wildermuth, a company spokesman in Sacramento. The company's hiring needs were reduced because more employees than expected at the two offices agreed to move and fewer employees than expected have left jobs at USAA in recent months, he said.
Currently, the company has no openings in its Colorado Springs office but hires personnel throughout the year. To check for openings and apply, go to the USAA's Web site, www.usaa.apply2jobs.com/default.htm.
The Sacramento and Norfolk offices had too much empty space and were too expensive to maintain and operate, while the company's offices in the Springs, Phoenix, San Antonio and Tampa, Fla., can accommodate additional personnel, Wildermuth said. The Springs office, at 1855 Telstar Drive, employs 1,011 and could accommodate up to 1,500, company officials have said.
USAA serves 6.8 million members of the military and their families. The local office had previously worked with members in 11 states but now deals with them worldwide, including those deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
