Woman hospitalized after being broadsided in northeast Colorado Springs

A woman remained hospitalized Monday morning after her vehicle was hit by a driver whom police say ran a red light in northeast Colorado Springs.

The woman, whose name was not released, suffered internal injuries and a possible broken arm in the crash, according to Colorado Springs police Sgt. Mike Roy. Her injuries are not life-threatening.

She was driving her car at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday through an intersection on Woodmen Road west of Powers Boulevard when she was broadsided by a truck going west on Woodmen. The woman’s car ended up on its top.

The crash closed Woodmen Road for a couple hours. The man driving the truck, 60-year-old Kevin Seger of Peyton, was cited for running a red light.

Interior secretary to rally volunteers for Bennet

DENVER (AP) — Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and about two dozen volunteers are kicking off a door-to-door campaign for Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet.

Salazar came to his old campaign headquarters in Denver, where Democrats now are working the phones for Bennet, his successor.

Salazar told the volunteers Sunday not to despair because of the nation's anti-incumbent mood. He said he also was an underdog when he was elected to the Senate in 2004.

Bennet was appointed to replace Salazar in the U.S. Senate after Salazar was appointed to the Obama cabinet. Now, Bennet is seeking election for the first time. He faces Republican Ken Buck in November.

Arapahoe County inmate found hanged in cell

LITTLETON, Colo. (AP) — A 21-year-old inmate is dead after being found hanged inside his cell at the Arapahoe County Detention Facility.

Sheriff Grayson Robinson says Jeffrey Wayne Purcella of Aurora was hanging from a bedsheet Sunday morning about 40 minutes after he was seen chatting with other inmates.

Court records show that last month Purcella had pleaded guilty by reason of insanity to attacking a relative in his parent's home two years ago.

Robinson says the death is being investigated.

He says jailers knew of no problems with Purcella's conduct or any recent behavior to suggest he was a risk to himself.

The likely driver was identified as 46-year-old Jonathan Heardt, who's believed to be from Milliken.

The name of a 49-year-old woman hasn't been released.

Alm says it's still not clear what caused the crash.

Longmont police arrest suspect in attempted murder

LONGMONT, Colo. (AP) — Longmont police say they arrested a 19-year-old man believed to have been hiding in Mexico after a warrant was issued for him on a charge of attempted first-degree murder.

Police say Pedro Garcia-Gonzalez surrendered to authorities Saturday afternoon after a SWAT team surrounded the Longmont home he was in. Police say they believe Garcia-Gonzalez had been spending time in Mexico but would return to visit friends and family.

Authorities say Garcia-Gonzales is wanted on several charges, including attempted first-degree murder and child abuse. Protest against police tactics draws 150

DENVER (AP) — A protest against recent allegations of police and jail guard misconduct drew about 150 people in Denver.

Protesters marched along a route that took them to three sites of recent cases that have brought criticism of excessive force and the resignation of Denver's Safety Manager Ron Perea.

Protesters gathered at a spot where Mark Ashford was beaten by police after shooting video of a police traffic stop. They marched past 15th and Larimer streets, where recently released video of police beating Shawn Johnson and Michael DeHerrera sparked a firestorm.

The march ended at the new Denver jail, where Marvin Booker died July 9 after sheriff's deputies had their weight on him for about four minutes. All three cases remain under investigation.
