Josh Blue gets laughs for Paralympics
Josh Blue himself doesn’t know what to expect for his comedy show Friday in the Springs. Without the restrictions of television, Blue said he’ll be able to “take the leash off” and be a little more exuberant, a little more wild.
“The funny thing is, I have people ask me, ‘What can you expect?’ ” Blue said. “The truth is, I don’t even know. I don’t write this down; it’s just what comes out.”
Blue, winner of NBC’s “Last Comic Standing” in 2006, will be in town Friday for an evening of comedy with a surprise guest opening act. The show starts at 8 p.m. at Stargazers Theatre, 10 S. Parkside Drive.
Since winning last comic, Blue — who lives in Denver with his wife and two children — has toured the country for shows, created an album with songs like, “I Would Stop Drinking If You Would Stop Talking” and appeared on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” “Live With Regis and Kelly” and “Comics Unleashed.”
He is perhaps best known for his stand-up acts about having cerebral palsy, including a Youtube video called “How Josh Blue Got Palsy,” which, he says, is among his best.
“I always say — and this is kind of funny — if I don’t talk about having cerebral palsy on stage, after a while, the audience is like, ‘Hey, does he know he has that? We might want to bring that up,’” Blue said.
“If you can be funny and talk about the situation, then it kind of diffuses it,” he said. “ The way I look at it, I’m so comfortable with who I am, you don’t have a right not to be comfortable with who I am.”
A portion of the proceeds from Friday’s performance will support Paralympic programs for Colorado Springs athletes with physical disabilities. Blue is a player for the U.S. Paralympic Soccer team.
