Squeezing out a scholarship

Lindsey Myers hopes her education costs only a song.

Myers, who starts law school at the University of Pennsylvania in September, is one of 10 finalists for a $10,000 scholarship from a student loan company for video essays on the theme "What Worries Me Most About Law School."

Myers, daughter of Colorado Springs Police Chief Richard Myers, wrote a song and played accordion while she acted out her law school fears, including getting looked down on for her Midwest roots, having her laptop stolen, and not being able to find a pencil for the bar test.

Penn will run $40,000 a year, Myers said, so the scholarship would cover her tuition until about Thanksgiving. Still, ten grand is nothing to shake a stick at. The 22-year-old, who graduated this spring from St. Olaf College in Minnesota, was searching for law-school scholarships and found the "One Less Worry" contest from the Access Group.

Myers has played the accordion since she was 6, she said. The song she wrote and recorded in a week on her laptop, then she got her mom to film the video. In true law-school fashion, Myers said she submitted it the night before the deadline.

Viewers can watch the finalists on YouTube and vote for the winner until Aug. 22. The winner will be announced Sept. 1.
