THE GAZETTE

A pipe bomb found in a northeast Colorado Springs neighborhood Monday afternoon has been detonated by a police bomb squad.

The 4-inch bomb was found around 12:45 p.m. near a parked car on Surrey Lane near Meadowland Drive east of Academy Boulevard, said Lt. Sal Fiorello.

The neighbor who found the bomb alerted a firefighter who lives in the neighborhood, who called police.

A robot brought the bomb to the middle of the road and stacked sandbags on top of it before it was detonated around 4 p.m.

Russell Middle School and Helen Keller Elementary School were temporarily on lock-down while police dealt with the bomb.

Police are investigating the bomb's origin.
