A 49-year-old man from outside Fairplay has been identified as the man who drowned Sunday in Eleven Mile Reservoir.

Clifford Carrano, who lived in a subdivision five miles south of Fairplay, died about 2 p.m. near the Lazy Boy area of the reservoir, according to Park County Coroner Sharon Morris.

Dive teams recovered his body less than 40 yards from shore in water that was less than 10 feet deep.

Carrano had gone into the water to get a boat that had drifted from shore, said park manager Kevin Tobey said.

He stopped short of it and was making his way back when he slipped under the surface.

Dive teams from the Hartsel Fire Department and Summit County were called to find the body. The Park County Sheriff’s Office and Colorado State Parks are also investigating the incident.

Two boats from the park service and another from the Hartsel Fire Department are assisting in finding the body.

Tobey said this was the first drowning to take place in the 10 years he has been park manager.

The Lazy Boy area is on the south side of the reservoir, roughly eight miles west of Florissant. People can beach their boats in the area, a popular spot for fishing and camping.

Swimming, however, is not allowed, Tobey said.

“The water temperature was 63 (degrees),” Tobey said. “Even a good swimmer can cramp quickly and have major issues.”
