Broncos release two picks from 2008 draft

THE GAZETTE

Two selections from last year’s draft class were among the first wave of players cut by the Denver Broncos as they trim down to 53 players.

Center Kory Lichtensteiger and defensive tackle Carlton Powell, who were fourth- and fifth-round picks last year, were among the nine players who were let go on Friday. Quarterback Ingle Martin, running back Marcus Thomas, receiver Nate Swift, offensive lineman Clint Oldenburg, defensive lineman Matthias Askew, linebacker Lee Robinson and cornerback Rashod Moulton were the others released.

Guard Matt McChesney, who played at the University of Colorado, missed Thursday’s game with an ankle injury and was put on injured reserve.

With those 10 players off the roster, the Broncos need to release 13 more before 4 p.m. today to get down to 53 players. The Broncos had 75 players on the roster for Thursday’s preseason game, and receiver Brandon Marshall will come off the suspended list this weekend. The agent for defensive end Everette Pedescleaux was also informed he will be released, according to his agent.

Cornerback Joshua Bell, who missed Thursday’s game with an injured knee, might be a candidate for an injury settlement.

Lichtensteiger was a second-team center most of training camp, but veterans Ben Hamilton and Russ Hochstein can also play center behind starter Casey Wiegmann. Powell missed all of last season with an Achilles tendon injury, and couldn’t move up the depth chart as a nose tackle in a 3-4 scheme with three defensive linemen.
