Overnight fire damages medical building

THE GAZETTE

A fire broke out overnight in a medical building in northern Colorado Springs across from Penrose Community Hospital, causing moderate damage.

Firefighters responded to the fire at 3100 Academy Blvd. about 2:30 a.m., said Colorado Springs Fire Department spokesman Lt. James Eddy. The fire, which started in an electrical closet on the second floor, generated lots of smoke in the locked-up building, making it difficult to locate the flames, he said. Firefighters broke through doors of multiple business offices in search of the fire, which spread into the ceiling and traveled from one side of the building to the other.

Firefighters had control of the fire, he said, two hours later. An estimate of the damage was unavailable this morning. Although the fire started in the electrical closet, he said, firefighters had not concluded whether an electrical problem was the cause for the blaze.
