NOREEN: Fracking, legal pot, city hall among January winners

THE GAZETTE

Now that we’ve plunged almost an entire month into the new year, we can take stock by viewing the universal public events scoreboard.

One apology before we begin: This is a bit like the scoreboard at the World Arena in that you won’t get nearly all of the updates you want, and some of the scores may not be close to being in real time. But at least here, you won’t have to pay $6.50 for a beer.

Colorado College 11, WCHA 7. There is still time for the Tigers to get on a roll, don’t give up, fans. Beat DU.

Spring 27, Winter 20. Careful, because winter has been known to make big comebacks.

City Hall 21, Urban Renewal Authority 20, at the half. This score is deceiving because the Urban Renewal Authority has no defense and City Hall appears to have its dander up.

Fracking 142, Anti-frackers 10 in the second quarter. Some property values will go down if drilling begins. It will be legal but hardly fair, and a group of property owners will discover that “fair” hasn’t got anything to do with it. The state attorney general sides with the feds.

Keeping Pot Illegal 24, Legal Pot 17 at the half. Ballot measure will have a hard time. State attorney general sides with the feds.

ObamaCare 28 Critics 20. It hasn’t been found unconstitutional yet. State attorney general can’t stand the feds on this one.

Federal Government Control 54, States’ Rights 14. Don’t ask the state attorney general which side he’s on.

Amy Stephens 21, Marcia Looper 14, at the half. This has the potential to be a very physical bout, if you like that sort of thing.

Doug Lamborn 35, Robert Blaha 7 in the second quarter. Incumbent’s home-field advantage means a lot. Challenger needs some big plays. Do fans really care if the chair was empty?

Colorado General Assembly 542, Peace on Earth 12. No man’s life, liberty or property can be safe when the legislature is in session. In 90 days this game will be over.

New England 31, New York 20. At least it’s not the Yankees and the Red Sox. We’ve seen quite enough of that.

Navy Seals 81, Bad Guys 0. It is tough to beat the Navy Seals.

Heroic Boy Scout Eric Jordan Evans 187, a troop number, and we simply applaud. Who raised this kid? They deserve an award, too.

Columnist 180, Willpower 173. It’s seven pounds, blubber boy.

March 3, 847, Groundhog Day, 12. Gotta go with the Rockies’ first spring training game over this coming Thursday. Rockies cast a long shadow.

Beat DU, Beat DU. This week’s mantra.
