Air Force notes: Jefferson fine tuning

THE GAZETTE

Air Force sophomore quarterback Tim Jefferson took every snap with the first-team offense during Saturday’s scrimmage session at Falcon Stadium.

Jefferson, according to unofficial statistics kept by The Gazette, completed 5-of-8 passes for 64 yards and led the first-team offense to two touchdowns in six possessions. Sophomore Asher Clark, Jefferson’s top competition in the preseason, spent the entire day at tailback and had five carries for 27 yards.

Some good, some sloppy

While Jefferson was mostly solid, he and fullback Jared Tew botched a handoff that resulted in a lost fumble. It was like that for nearly all the Falcons.

Sophomore Z receiver Jonathan Warzeka ran for 36 yards and a score on three carries, but he negated a punt return for a touchdown by Anthony Wright Jr. with an illegal block. Sophomore receiver Zack Kauth had receptions of 20 and 22 yards but also lost a fumble. And the first-team defense mostly shut down the second-team and scout offenses but gave up a big gain on a reverse.

“There were some good things, and there were some parts that were sloppy too,” coach Troy Calhoun said. “And it’s got to get cleaned up.”

Rembert’s status uncertain

Calhoun said junior cornerback Reggie Rembert still is under suspension for an unspecified violation of academy standards, but he would not say if Rembert would be cleared to play by the opener. Rembert played with the second-team defense Saturday. Sophomore P.J. Adeji-Paul took his place with the first team.

Means could start

Junior outside linebacker Patrick Hennessey (shoulder) is questionable for next Saturday’s opener. If he does not play, freshman Alex Means could start in his place, Calhoun said.

Etc.

Senior guard Nick Charles (hamstring) is doubtful for the opener, Calhoun said. … Senior defensive lineman Stephen Larson has left the team and will concentrate on wrestling. Larson is a standout heavyweight wrestler.
