Pointy-eared pioneer has Trekkie appeal
The answers were quite logical, of course.
When we asked local Trekkies which character from "Star Trek" they'd most like to be, the guy with the pointy ears almost always landed at the top of the list.
"I am now and always have been Mr. Spock," commenter davidb wrote, alluding to the famous Spock death scene in "Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan."
Trekkies, or Trekkers as many prefer to be called, have been breaking out the Klingon wornagh and bloodwine to celebrate the opening today of the new "Star Trek" film, which Gazette critic Brandon Fibbs calls "a jaw-dropping experience ... thrilling and sexy again."
The new film will ride on a wave of endearment built up from more than 40 years of dedicated viewing. The characters, it seems, have become a part of people's lives.
The half-Vulcan, half-human character seemed to capture most of our collective imagination.
"My son calls me Mrs. Spock because I tend to think logically," momnature wrote.
"Bones and Spock were always my favorites of all the characters."
"When I was a kid, I wanted to be Spock because he seemed so smart and invincible," wrote everardomelena. "Later, I really liked Data, La Forge, Dr. Bashir, Harry Kim and Paris. Capt. Archer and his crew seemed to experience a lot of real adventure, unsanitized - still real pioneers. So it could be cool to be Malcolm Reed or Trip."
