YOUR SPACE: Local broadcasters wrap up big win in burrito video contest
The video took the two local TV broadcast guys a few minutes to write, maybe an hour to shoot.
The title, that was easy: “Toledo Burrito.” Because Toledo rhymes with burrito.
For their brilliance, Michael Ring, 23, and Nolan Campbell, 25, tied for 6th place in an “My Chipotle” online video contest.
In the 30-second clip, Nolan plays guitar badly and croons a love song about a burrito that filled his stomach with delight. They shamelessly used social networking to get 5,862 votes.
The prize: 10 burritos.
It was like winning the big bean lottery.
The roommates don’t plan to quit their day jobs at KRDO/Channel 13. Michael, the one with the black nerd glasses, edits the 5-6-and-10 p.m. casts. Nolan, unshaven baby-faced photographer, shoots the news. He also plays bass in a metal band.
I met them at Chipotle. Between bites, they talked about life after Toledo Burritodom.
Michael: We’ve had so much fame, where do I start? Well, we went to a carnival and there was this guy there riding on a Ferris wheel. He looked down and saw Nolan and said, “There’s the burrito guy.”
Nolan: It could happen someday.
Michael: Yeah.
Nolan: I’m in a band that I put a lot of effort into, and it would be hilarious if people will know who I was because of something I wrote in two minutes sitting on the kitchen floor.
Michael: It has a lot to do with Nolan’s face. It’s adorable and the girls love it. He’s dating like eight girls now. I can’t blame him.
Nolan: At first, we expected to win.
Michael: We didn’t set out to win 6th place.
Nolan: People said that stupid song is so catchy. They couldn’t get it out of their head all day.
Michael: It was stuck in our heads. It’s one of those things we’d get it out of our head and then go online to check the status of the video and it would play automatically and we’d get it stuck back in our head.
Nolan: There was a long period of waiting. You just want it to be over.
Michael: We found the Kirby contest. We figured we were one of the few people who knew how to put stuff on YouTube that owned a Kirby vacuum. We picked the most ridiculously crazy things you can ever do with a vacuum.
Examples: Nolan in the shower using the nozzle as a wash rag. Saving the Kirby from a burning house.
Michael: The neighbors laughed at us dropping the vacuum out the window.
Note: It worked. The Kirby video won them $500.
Michael: It’s a lot more useful than winning a boat. ‘Cause I don’t know what I’d do with a boat.
Nolan: If I won a boat, I’d sell it. We got our burrito. We’re happy campers.
