Monument mayor resigns
Comments 0 | Recommend 0MONUMENT - After five years at the helm, Byron Glenn officially has resigned as mayor of this upscale, bedroom community.
Now, he has other priorities. "I am going to grow a beard and carry a big gun," said Glenn, 47.
He took a job in Fairbanks, Alaska, as environmental and utility manager for Actus Lend Lease.
Glenn, a civil engineer and married father of three teens, blames the housing and development downturn for his decision to leave Monument and the firm he owned.
"The economy took a dump," he said. "I had to do something to support my family."
Other matters didn't help: He was a consultant for LandCo Equity Partners, the developer in the middle of the downtown U.S. Olympic Committee headquarters controversy.
"That's a whole different topic and it makes my blood boil," Glenn said. "The way they created agreements and never followed through, I was in that position as well."
The Monument mayor's post is unpaid.
Town clerk Scott W. Meszaros said Glenn spearheaded voter initiative for the Baptist Road bridge and was an instigator in building the new 17,000-square-foot Town Hall.
Travis W. Easton, a board trustee, was appointed Monument mayor until the next election in April of 2010. The new mayor got some good news at Monday's meeting, where Glenn read his resignation.
"Sales tax collected from January through June of 2009 was ahead of 2008 collection by 16.4 percent or $272,216," Meszaros said.
