YOUR SPACE: He's a 35-year-old virgin filmmaker

THE GAZETTE

He sleeps in a bedroom set won on a game show and lives with a woman who’s funnier than he is.

Such is the life of comedian Rich Praytor.

But wait, there’s more.

He’s in dire need of $100,000.

Praytor, 35, is trying to finance his film, “The Waiting Game,” a faith-based comedy he wrote about a guy staying a virgin. Think a PG-rated version of “The 40-year-old Virgin.”

“Trying to make the movie clean enough but talk about the realities of life — that is a huge obstacle,” he says.

His goal is for 100 people to give a grand each, but 100,000 donations of $1 would do the trick.

With his dark-haired, Guy Next Door looks, Praytor resembles a younger Ray Romano. He’s got “Raymond” mannerisms as well.

He moved from Texas to Los Angeles after college, where he dug ditches to support his comedy habit. He did stand-up at clubs, churches and on TV. He won an American Gospel Music Award for Best Comedian and wrote a book, “A Stand-Up Comic Sits Down with Jesus.”

“I’ve been in clubs where it is totally dirty and nasty. I always stand out. People say, ‘You were the only clean one there,’” he says. “Sometimes if you do a church, you wish there was a two-drink minimum.”

He moved here five years ago. He has performed at local churches, but most gigs are out of town.

He plans to shoot the movie in the Pikes Peak region. The cast will include L.A. friends such as comedians Kenn Kington and Bone Hampton. Locals can try out for roles — sorry, your $1 or $1,000 won’t buy your way into stardom, but you will get a copy of the DVD.

Production will begin when blessed by the bankroll. So far, he’s raised $125.

The plot is about a guy who saved himself for his honeymoon. Six months later, his wife is still waiting for the right time to consummate their marriage when she runs off with a traveling nun choir. Back in the dating world, he wonders if staying pure until yet another marriage is worth it. For the rest, well, you have wait for the movie.

Praytor says it’s based on a true story, but not his. His would read somewhat different. This is, after all, a guy who sleeps in a bedroom set his wife won on “The Price is Right.”

It isn’t easy getting a bed that fits. Praytor is 6-foot-4 and wife Bridget is 6-foot-2. The tall couple and their three tall young kids live in a high-ceilinged house in Briargate funded by her game show wins.

“She gets recognized. They’re like, ‘You’re the girl on the game show,’” he says. “My wife is the funny one. The only thing I’m famous for is looking like Ray Romano.”
