Springs creeks deluged in doggy doo-doo

Scooped poop is creating a messy situation in Colorado Springs.

“We’ve had a massive number of people putting dog feces into the drainage areas,” city spokeswoman Sue Skiffington-Blumberg said today. “It’s become a real issue for us.”

Skiffington-Blumberg said the problem has been happening primarily in the Broadmoor Valley area and Mountain Shadows, some of the city’s more affluent neighborhoods.

“They’re picking up after their dogs, but then they’re putting the bagged feces into the storm water drain, and all that does is shoot it into our water system,” she said. “The whole idea is to pick it up and take it and throw it away at your home.”

Officials say the deluge of bagged poop has nothing to do with the city’s decision to remove all the trash cans from more than 100 neighborhood parks.

“This is not a new problem,” spokeswoman Julie Smith said. “It’s always happened, and it’s the pet owner’s responsibility to dispose of it in the trash.”

Skiffington-Blumberg said her office plans to launch a communications campaign reminding pet owners to throw their doggy doo in the trash.

“What we want people to do is take responsibility and have consideration for your downstream neighbors and dispose of (the pet waste) appropriately in the trash can in your own garage,” she said.
