A man found dead Sunday outside his Stetson Hill home was shot to death, Colorado Springs police said.

An autopsy Monday revealed that 46-year-old Richard L. Schreiner died of a gunshot wound to the torso.

Neighbors had seen him shoveling snow around his home shortly before his death, police said. Colorado Springs police spokesman Lt. David Whitlock had said Sunday there were no obvious signs of foul play.

Police offered no explanation Monday for the discrepancy.

Schreiner's body was seen by a neighbor about 9 a.m. on the public sidewalk outside his home on Amberly Drive on the city's far eastern edge.

Police and emergency crews reported the man was unresponsive when they arrived and efforts to revive him failed.

The El Paso County Coroner's Office conducted the autopsy Monday and ruled the death a homicide - the 22nd this year in Colorado Springs. The city ended 2007 with 28 homicides - tying a record set in 1991.

Schreiner worked in the dean of faculty's registrars office at the Air Force Academy, said Chris DeWitt, an academy spokeswoman.

Schreiner had just finished shoveling his driveway and sidewalk and was running down the street to do the same for his mother, said Bill Althoff, who has lived next to Schreiner on Amberly Drive for nearly five years.

Sandy Schreiner, Richard Schreiner's wife, went looking for her husband when he failed to return home in time to go to church at Rocky Mountain Calvary Church.

After finding him on the ground, she performed CPR, Althoff said.

"He was the best neighbor you could have. He was an awesome neighbor, a great father and faithful husband," Althoff said.

"When his teens were at Sand Creek High School, he was active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He was just a great guy.

"We are keeping the family in our prayers. This is unbelievable.

"This is a quiet area; nobody bothers us and nothing ever happens here. I pray that detectives can determine who did this."

According to county property records, Richard and Sandra Schreiner bought the house on Amberly Drive in 2004.

The phone at his home had been disconnected Monday, and police said no further information was available.
