Record number of seat-belt tickets issued

THE DENVER POST

DENVER - Colorado transportation officials say law enforcement issued a record number of tickets to drivers who were not wearing seat belts during a two-week period last month.

The more than 12,500 tickets were written during the "Click it or Ticket" campaign that ended May 31.

The Colorado Department of Transportation says the previous record was set in 2007 when the State Patrol and law enforcement around the state issued more than 11,400 tickets during the campaign. More than 9,800 tickets were issued last year.

Not wearing a seat belt in Colorado is a secondary offense, meaning officers have to stop drivers for another reason before they can cite them for not being buckled up.

Seat-belt violations carry a fine of $72.
