LETTERS: Man gives life for dog; 'Jeopardy' complaints; and more

FOR THE EDITORIAL BOARD

Thanks for Empty Stocking

Thank-you for your outstanding support of the Empty Stocking Fund! Every year, The Gazette, El Pomar, the Bruni Foundation and the entire El Paso County community are so generous with their time, talent, and treasure in support of the fund. It never seems like enough to simply say “thank you”, but for Pikes Peak Community Action Agency (PPCAA) the funds raised during this campaign play such a pivotal role in keeping our doors open and helping the ever-increasing number of struggling families.

Sir Winston Churchill once said, “We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give.” During a time when the economy is struggling, poverty is increasing and local nonprofits are seeing a higher demand for services, we have once again pulled together as a community to help those in need.

Since 1964 PPCAA has been “breaking the cycle of poverty” by helping low-income individuals and families become self-sufficient. Thanks to your ongoing generosity and support, in 2011 we were able to help over 17,000 low-income individuals. These individuals were able to find new jobs, purchase homes, start a new business, obtain a higher education and more. We helped families pay rent, put food on the table, keep the heat on, and offered many other valuable services to help get them through life’s rough spots.

The Empty Stocking Fund is well on its way to reaching its goal of $1 million — and it is because of our caring community that nonprofits, like Pikes Peak Community Action Agency, are able to reach out and make a difference in someone’s life. On behalf of PPCAA’s clients, staff, board of directors, and volunteers, thank you for your unending support.

Man gave life for dog

I wanted to write and express my sympathy and regard for the man who risked and ultimately sacrificed his own life to save his dog from drowning in an icy pond in Fountain last Saturday (“UPDATE: Rescue effort that pulled man from icy pond ends in tragedy,” Jan. 14.) I also wanted to express my admiration for the rescue workers who tried to save his life.

Like William Tuttle, I also have a pit bull (mix) and understand how strong that bond between human and canine can be.

I hope his devotion to his dog inspires all of us to be better caretakers of our canine family members by walking them (on a leash) every day, having them spayed or neutered, never chaining them, and always keeping them safely indoors with the rest of the family.

Another ‘Jeopardy’ complaint

Re: “No news is good news” from Shirley Peterson on Jan. 16: I agree with her statements and would like to add that we have cable and watched the 4 p.m. Jeopardy! on the 9th of this month, the first time for the time change. Then out of curiosity, we switched to “MYKKTV” at 6:30 to compare if they were the same broadcast — they were not! So, Shirley, you aren’t missing any recent programs by not having cable to view at 6:30 p.m.

It is too bad KKTV made this switch, hopefully viewers will complain and they will reconsider. I am unable to send my comments to KKTV via email and I don’t Twitter or tweet! So hopefully they have someone who reads the printed news.

Thanks to The Gazette for this opportunity to complain.

Restore ‘Jeopardy’ slot

Thank you, Shirley Peterson for pointing out the poor choice by Channel 11 to put Jeopardy at 4:00 p.m. The 6:30 version appears to be from old Jeopardy footage, not even the new shows. This just gives us another reason to not watch Channel 11 as we choose Channel 5 for our news updates. I too, feel we are bombarded with news which most often is not even newsworthy. The crawl at the bottom of Channel 11 contains Fox-like information aimed at getting us riled up about nothing. I would rather be entertained and educated in a Jeopardy format than served a left-over version of 5:30’s news. What is the fix for this debacle? Answer: put Jeopardy back at 6:30.
