Air Force finishes off road sweep of Mercyhurst
Air Force held off Mercyhurst 6-5 on Saturday night in Erie, clinching home ice for the first round of the Atlantic Hockey Association playoffs.
But more importantly, the victory gave the Falcons a weekend sweep and a chance to get a week off.
"On the second night, so many times we have failed to get it done,'' Air Force coach Frank Serratore said. "Tonight we got it done and got the four points that we needed.''
The Falcons (14-11-6, 12-7-6 AHA) trail Robert Morris by a point with two regular-season games left — against Robert Morris on Friday and Saturday night at Cadet Ice Arena. If the Falcons win 3-of-4 points from the Colonials, they would earn a first-round bye and avoid the first round of the playoffs entirely.
On Saturday night, Jason Fabian scored twice and Pine Creek’s Kyle De Laurell, captain Jacques Lamoureux and George Michalke each finished with a goal and assist for the Falcons, who led 3-1 after one period and 5-3 after two. Freshman Jason Torf made 27 saves for his 11th victory this season.
“We had good balance throughout our lineup tonight,” Serratore said. “We played pretty well tonight.''
Lamoureux's goal gave him 56 for his career in AHA games to tie the all-time league record set by Army’s Owen Meyer (2006-10). Meyer set the record in 106 games. Lamoureux has played in 79.
