Jared Tew leads the Falcons in rushing.

Air Force notes: Tew can carry the load

Any questions about whether junior Jared Tew could handle the physical demands of being Air Force’s starting fullback have been answered emphatically in recent weeks.

In the past four games, Tew has averaged 19.3 carries, including 27 last week against Wyoming. Tew leads the Falcons in rushing with 422 yards and has carried the ball a team-high 119 times — 52 times more than the second-leading carriers, tailbacks Savier Stephens and Asher Clark.

“He gets a lot of carries,” Air Force coach Troy Calhoun said. “And the thing that he does is he gets hard yards. … I thought last year he had really good feet and because of that he had some bigger runs. This year he looks stronger.”

Tew put on 10 pounds and improved his strength in the offseason, and he said he can feel the difference in games.

“Last year it kind of felt like sometimes I’d get pushed around,” Tew said. “Someone would hit me hard and I’d just go flying. This year it feels like I can man up a little bit against some of these people.”

The appearance is kicking off a special week of programming by the network in conjunction with Veterans Day.
