Air Force relying heavily on Washington
Evan Washington knew he would have to play a bigger role this season as one of Air Force’s few experienced returnees. He had no idea he would be the only experienced returnee who made it to conference play without a major mishap.
Washington has watched five teammates deal with injuries so far. The Falcons at least got some good news when center Mike McLain, who was elbowed in the face in Wednesday’s loss at Texas Christian and missed the final 5:54, practiced Thursday. He should play tonight at Colorado State, as should guard Avery Merriex (broken nose, concussion). But forward Grant Parker (groin), center Sammy Schafer (concussion) and forward Taylor Stewart (forearm) are out.
Without Parker, Stewart and Schafer, Washington is the only current Falcons player that averaged more than 1.4 points last season. Air Force, predictably, has relied heavily on the 6-4 junior guard. Washington is averaging 34.7 minutes, up six from last year, and his scoring has gone from 6.8 points to 12.1.
“He’s probably been our most consistent player,” Air Force coach Jeff Reynolds said. “Even when he doesn’t score, with his penetration he’s creating opportunities for his teammates.”
One of the tough parts of being a veteran leader around many young players is taking over games without being selfish. Washington has struck a good balance – his 50 assists are 26 more than any other Falcons player – but still is figuring out when the situation dictates he control the ball.
“Whenever our team goes on a scoring drought, that’s when the coaches look to me to not just score but set up the offense,” Washington said.
Reynolds also admits Washington is probably playing too many minutes. He played 37 against TCU. With so few veteran options, the Falcons don’t have much choice. And as Reynolds admits, it will be even tougher to limit his minutes now that conference play has started.
“It’s something me and coach talk about all the time,” Washington said. “It’s just me telling him when I’ve got to come out. I hate to come out but sometimes it’s better to have a fresh guy in there.”
