Coors Field won’t serve draft beer in clubhouses
Comments 0 | Recommend 0DENVER - There won’t be any Coors, or any other beer, available in the clubhouses at Coors Field anymore.
The team decided to eliminate draft beer from the home and visiting clubhouses, Rockies vice president of communications and public relations Jay Alves said Thursday. The change came after Cardinals pitcher Josh Hancock died April 29 in a car crash. He was legally drunk at the time.
The Rockies had been on the road since April 29.
“As an organization we thought it was the best decision,” Alves said.
Alves said the organization will have no further official comment. Many teams, including the Cardinals, Cubs and Orioles, have changed their policies on alcohol in the clubhouse since Hancock’s death.
There was no outcry among the Rockies after the change.
“I didn’t even know we didn’t have it in here,” Rockies outfielder Brad Hawpe said before Thursday’s game against San Francisco. “It doesn’t affect me. It doesn’t matter one bit to me. When we start stretching in a few minutes, I won’t even remember that happened.”
Manager Clint Hurdle said he didn’t have any problem with the new policy.
“I can’t see any harm being done when they’re making those decisions and banning the alcohol from the clubhouses,” Hurdle said.
Pitcher Josh Fogg, the Rockies’ union representative, said the players weren’t consulted but he would support the organization’s decision.
“We don’t really get any say in it,” Fogg said. “They’re going to make their own decision.”
