Broncos notes: Berger happy to be in Denver

Punter Mitch Berger is glad to be back in Colorado, even though it took a while to return.

Berger, who was a letter-winner at Colorado from 1991-93, signed with the Denver Broncos this week. His first game this season will begin his 16th NFL season.

“It’s full circle and it’s an opportunity to play kind of where it all started for me,” Berger said. “This is kind of where I started playing big-time football. It’s a good place to be back to.”

Berger was added because Brett Kern was struggling a bit and the Broncos felt a veteran like Berger could handle all the different kicks they want out of their punter. Berger will also replace Kern as the holder for kicker Matt Prater, so Prater, Berger and snapper Lonie Paxton have put in some extra work this week.

“We worked the first day and it seemed to go really well,” Berger said.

Reed focus
The Broncos will spend plenty of time concentrating on Ravens safety Ed Reed, a five-time Pro Bowler and former NFL Defensive Player of the Year.
Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton said Reed is tough to play against because he has the confidence in himself and his teammates to freelance and make plays. Orton said Reed is the first player he has to be aware of before each play.
“Just because you see 10 guys doing one thing, it doesn’t mean he’s going to fall in line,” Orton said. “It’s unorthodox.”
