Broncos notes: Brandstater isn't worrying over playing time

THE GAZETTE

Rookie quarterback Tom Brandstater didn’t play in the Broncos’ first preseason game, and with both veteran quarterbacks needing work in a new offense, it’s unclear when he will play.

Brandstater said he hasn’t been told when or if he will play this preseason. Denver drafted him in the sixth round but he gets few practice repetitions behind Kyle Orton and Chris Simms. Some teams have taken to keeping only two quarterbacks on the opening-day roster, but Brandstater said he wasn’t worrying about that.

“There are things I can’t control,” Brandstater said. “You just have to give them every reason to keep you around, and hopefully I’ve done that.”

Brandstater said he did feel he has had a good rookie camp considering his limited repetitions.

“It’s more about making those reps count,” Brandstater said. “And when I get my chance I have to make the most of it.”

Veteran secondary

Having veterans Brian Dawkins, Champ Bailey, Renaldo Hill and Andre Goodman can make life easier for the position coach. Secondary coach Ed Donatell said he’s been picking up plenty of things from his veteran starters.

“It’s pretty neat,” Donatell said. “They have a lot of good ideas you want to use, and they’re really easy to work with. These guys, their personalities individually are so great. To put them together, I think we’re going to have some pretty nice chemistry.”
