Broncos' Stokley is comfortable with his role

THE GAZETTE

ENGLEWOOD • Brandon Stokley is 33 years old, suffered another concussion last season, became the fourth receiver in the Denver Broncos’ pecking order this offseason and doesn’t play special teams.

Yet he’s still around because he always gets open and catches about everything thrown his way.

Stokley easily was the leading receiver in Thursday’s scrimmage, a continuation of his strong training camp. Denver gave $10 million to receiver Jabar Gaffney this offseason to complement starters Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal, but Stokley is earning his own role.

“We’ll play Brandon probably more than they did last year because of the way we’re going to be in three-receiver offense,” coach Josh McDaniels said. “Brandon’s got a great role.”

Stokley said he never worried about playing time, even after the new coaching staff arrived and Gaffney — who has ties with McDaniels from their days in New England — signed.

“I don’t know what my role is and I’m not really concerned about it,” Stokley said. “I know if I stay healthy, I’ll contribute.”

Stokley considered his health when weighing retirement. He had concussion tests done during the offseason and felt better about returning once he was cleared.

“I got that checked out again and the guy said I was good to go,” Stokley said. “So I’m not concerned about that.”

Etc.

Defensive end J’Vonne Parker was put on injured reserve after hurting his knee Thursday. His spot on the roster was taken by rookie running back Knowshon Moreno, who should participate in his first practice today. ... Monday’s afternoon practice, which was scheduled to be open to the public, has been canceled.
