Broncos not worried about poor showing; Moreno sprains MCL
There are few signs of true concern from the Denver Broncos.
The regular-season opener is less than a month away and quarterback Kyle Orton has yet to impress in his new job, the offense seems to be still catching up and now running back Knowshon Moreno is dealing with a knee injury. Nobody was in a worried state in the Broncos locker room after their 17-16 loss to San Franscisco.
The good news for the Broncos is on Moreno. ESPN reported he has a sprain of his medial collateral ligament. The report said he might miss some time in the preseason but should be ready for the regular-season opener.
The most popular topic in Colorado after the first preseason game will be a potential quarterback controversy. However, Broncos coach Josh McDaniels isn't willing to reverse his decision from June, when he made Orton the starter.
McDaniels admitted Orton made some mistakes but said other players made plenty of errors as well. McDaniels said he still had faith in Orton, as did the players. Receiver Eddie Royal said he backed Orton.
"Definitely,” Royal said. “We know it’s the preseason and mistakes are going to happen. And the mistakes that did happen are minor things we can fix.”
The offense still has work to do. The Broncos ran a complicated gameplan for a preseason opener, which was a glimpse of the massive playbook McDaniels has thrust upon the players. The starting offense didn't score in a full half of work, but there wasn't much worry about that either.
"You certainly don’t hope for that, but after the first preseason game there’s always a lot of things to fix and improvement to be made,” McDaniels said.
Practice closed
The Broncos announced Sunday's lone practice will be closed to the public.
