Roster stability has been key for the Broncos
Comments 0 | Recommend 0ENGLEWOOD • The last time the Denver Broncos made a change to the active roster or practice squad was five days before the regular season. Receiver Chad Jackson was released to make room for reinstated receiver Brandon Marshall.
No players have been cut because they’re not playing well. No free agents have been considered an upgrade over Denver’s 53 players, or any of the eight practice squad members. No Broncos players have landed on injured reserve. The Broncos haven’t had to make any moves to bolster depth because of a lingering injury.
The lack of roster activity over the past six weeks is more than a curious oddity. The front office didn’t make any glaring mistakes when they put together the team.
“It goes back to the creation of the roster, and not bringing in players that don’t fit our mold,” McDaniels said. “If you bring in guys that you think have a chance to fit your football team and your philosophy, when you decide on your final roster you have a team full of them.”
That doesn’t mean changes won’t be considered. The National Football Post reported the Broncos worked out veteran punter Mitch Berger on Wednesday.
The team has also been very fortunate it hasn’t had any major injuries. The starting defense has been the same for every game. No offensive starters have missed more than one game due to injury. That has been a major factor in Denver’s success early this season, but even McDaniels knows it can’t last.
“I’m sure we’ll end up with our share of injuries,” McDaniels said. “We’ve had guys miss time but we’ve been fortunate nobody had an injury that’s going to cause them to miss the rest of the year.”
