Law will learn on the fly for Broncos

ENGLEWOOD • The plan is for Ty Law to play Monday against Pittsburgh, three days after the veteran cornerback signed with Denver. There isn’t much choice, considering the team cut Jack Williams to make room for Law.

Williams, a 2008 fourth-round pick, had been splitting nickel cornerback duties with rookie Alphonso Smith. The nickel job could go immediately to Law.

“I’m just going to kind of wing it and go out and do the best I can,” said Law, who played three days after being signed by the New York Jets last season.

Law admitted his role will be limited at the start. He’s been out of football all year, staying in shape while waiting for the best opportunity. He said one other team, which he didn’t name, was interested. Indianapolis, which has had a rash of injuries in the secondary, contacted Law after he committed to the Broncos, he said.

Law wanted to play for Denver because of his familiarity with Josh McDaniels as both spent many years in New England. He’s also comfortable jumping into a situation where the team is 6-1 and the secondary is loaded with experience.

“It’s different between walking into a situation where you’ve got a bunch of young guys, a bunch of first- and second-year guys,” Law said. “This is perfect. I can take my time and learn the system because it’s already established and all I’m doing is trying to help.”

Although Law said the defensive terminology is different for him, the coaches hope he picks it up quickly.

“Hopefully you have an opportunity to get comfortable quicker than if it was a younger player,” McDaniels said.
