Cassel flustered by Broncos

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Matt Cassel was much better when Josh McDaniels was helping him, not coaching against him.

Cassel, the Chiefs quarterback who learned under McDaniels when the two were in New England, was harassed Sunday by the Broncos. Cassel was benched late in the third quarter after the Chiefs fell behind 34-6.

Cassel completed only 10-of-29 passes for 84 yards. In the third quarter, he threw two interceptions before his first completion.

"I think coach did a great job with the gameplan to have him confused," said cornerback Andre Goodman, who intercepted Cassel in the third quarter. "He was holding the ball a lot and wasn't sure what he was seeing.”

The Broncos’ secondary played well, and faces a huge challenge next week against the Colts and quarterback Peyton Manning, who has tortured the Broncos in the past. The Broncos are going to have to get some pressure on Manning and hold up as well in coverage as they did against the Chiefs.

“When our rush is giving some pressure, our guys have done a nice job of covering for the most part this year,” McDaniels said.
