Air Force freshman Clark breaks out in big way
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Saturday's game didn't get off to a great start for freshman tailback Asher Clark or the Air Force offense.
Clark was stuffed for a loss of 2 yards on the team's first play from scrimmage and hemmed in for a loss of 7 on their second.
But Clark made amends - and then some - the rest of the game.
Clark finished with a career-best 136 yards on 16 carries and scored on touchdown runs of 41 and 45 yards.
Clark's first touchdown came late in the first quarter. With Air Force facing a fourth-and-3 from the Colorado State 41-yard line, the Falcons called for an option left. Quarterback Tim Jefferson ran down the line and pitched to Clark, who turned the corner, got a great block from fullback Todd Newell and raced for a score.
His second touchdown came on an inside zone run when he cut back through the middle and outran the Colorado State defense to the end zone.
"The linemen definitely did their job, and I really didn't have to do much but go straight up the middle," Clark said.
Props for the cadets
Air Force improved to 9-2 at Falcon Stadium under coach Troy Calhoun. And the coach gave some credit to the rowdy cadet wing.
"Those are some wackos, now," Calhoun said. "Believe it or not, they'll be good leaders. I know sometimes you look over there and you say, ‘No way. Who's going to follow them.'"
Harrison sets record
Senior kicker Ryan Harrison made his lone field goal attempt - a 27-yarder that set the academy's record for field goals in a season. Harrison now has 20. He has made 30 of 32 dating to last season.
Etc.
Sophomore cornerback Reggie Rembert made a career-best 10 tackles and got his third interception of the season. ... Air Force reported four injuries. Senior safety Luke Yeager (left shoulder strain), sophomore outside linebacker Patrick Hennessey (right shoulder strain), senior fullback Todd Newell (right ankle sprain) and junior strong safety Chris Thomas (right ankle sprain) will be re-evaluated Monday. ... The five-game winning streak is the longest in Calhoun's tenure and the longest since Air Force opened the 2003 season 5-0.
