Air Force notes: New facility gets broken in

THE GAZETTE

On day two of football training camp, Air Force started to get a return on the $15.5 million investment in the Holaday Athletic Center.

About 45 minutes into practice Tuesday, with lightning flashing over the mountains, Troy Calhoun told his team to move inside the building. It was the first time the team has used the facility.

“It’s exactly what we needed,” Calhoun said. “It’s one of those, once you get in here you think, ‘How were we really, really able to function (in the field house)?’”

The HAC passed a test, because rain poured down during practice without the hint of a leak in the roof.

“It is quite fulfilling, after nearly four years of constant effort by the Endowment, to see our cadets using the facility,” said Mark Hille, vice president of development of the USAFA Endowment, which raised funds for the HAC.

Cornerback competition

The Falcons are letting senior cornerback Josh Hall have the first chance to take the vacant starting cornerback spot that Reggie Rembert held last year. Chris Miller is the clear No. 2 in the race at the moment.

“Josh Hall, it wouldn’t surprise me if he had a big year,” defensive coordinator Matt Wallerstedt said.

Backup tailback

The Falcons need to find a capable backup to tailback Asher Clark, and Darius Jones, Cody Getz and Anthony LaCoste have impressed running backs coach Des Kitchings.

“They’re very sharp in their assignments,” Kitchings said. “It’s very comforting to have those three guys you know are capable of playing.”
