Air Force notes: Fletcher finds scoring touch

Todd Fletcher had perhaps his best game of the season against Wyoming, giving the Falcons an unexpected scoring punch.

Fletcher’s usual role isn’t as a scorer, and he hadn’t scored more than six points in a game since Dec. 28. Against Wyoming he scored 13 points, hitting 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions early in the game as Air Force increased its lead from six points to 12.

“I’ve been struggling this year to score, I haven’t really been a threat at all,” said Fletcher, who also had a career-best five steals. “This whole time I’ve known I can if I want, but I haven’t been taking my opportunities.”

Fletcher said he hasn’t felt comfortable with his shot all season. Over Air Force’s six games before Saturday, he missed all nine of his 3-point attempts. When Wyoming made the first six points of the second half, Fletcher hit a big 3-pointer to stop the Cowboys’ momentum.

“We were fortunate Todd stepped up and made one,” coach Jeff Reynolds said.

Big crowd

The Falcons played in front of 3,904 fans at Clune Arena on Saturday, which was the largest home crowd of the season. They won their ninth home game this season, the most since 2007-08, and Reynolds said he appreciated the fans’ support.

“It was good to see,” Reynolds said. “I thought we had a few more students, and our guys enjoy that. They play hard. I think if people come out and see us play, they’d be enthused about the effort and the energy and the sense of urgency. It was good to see the crowd.”

Bohannon plays well

The Falcons’ leading scorer off the bench was forward Zach Bohannon, who scored seven points in 17 minutes. He scored eight against San Diego State and seems to be becoming a bigger part of the rotation.

“I thought Zach Bohannon did a good job coming in and finding those openings along the baseline,” Reynolds said.
