RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil - Three women who train in Colorado Springs helped the U.S. edge Canada for the freestyle wrestling team title.

Kristie Marano a two-time world champion and eight-time world medalist, pinned Ohenewa Akuffo of Canada in the 158.5-pound final.

Marcie Van Dusen lost to Colombia’s Jackeline Renteria to earn a silver medal at 121 pounds.

Stephanie Murata rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Ecuador’s Diana Piza in the bronze-medal match at 105.5. Murata fell to Carol Huynh of Canada in the semifinals.

Sarah McMann, of Gaffney, S.C., also won gold.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

The Americans, all college players, including several stars such as Georgetown’s Roy Hibbert and Michigan State’s Drew Neitzel, couldn’t overcome their sloppiness or the physical play of Uruguay in an 81-72 loss late Wednesday night.

Then they looked just as tentative in a 75-67 loss to Panama on Thursday.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Brazil beat the U.S. 5-0 as tournament high scorer Marta, the FIFA Player of the Year, and striker Cristiane each scored two goals in the match.

MEN'S WATER POLO

U.S. captain Tony Azevedo led a 9-2 romp over Brazil for the gold. The victory puts the squad into the Olympics.

SOFTBALL

The U.S. got a third no-hitter in as many games as Cat Osterman was perfect, fanning 14 in a 10-0 rout of Cuba. The game was shortened to five innings by the mercy rule.

WOMEN'S ARCHERY

Jenny Nichols of Cheyenne won the gold medal with 107 points, beating Mexico’s Aida Roman, who had 103.

BOWLING

Rhino Page and Tennelle Milligan won the men’s and women’s singles titles, respecitvely.

The United States had 187 medals (81 gold, 69 silver, 37 bronze) through Thursday.

Next was Brazil with 117, 35 gold, the same number of gold as Cuba.

Harrison school district closer to pay for performance for teachers
Should teacher pay be based on performance?
Yes. Teachers should be rewarded for good work, and poor performers should be weeded out.
No. Pay for performance is just a back-door way of blaming teachers for other problems in the education system.
It depends on what "performance" means. It's good if there's a fair measurement of performance.
Undecided.
