Broncos notes: Team makes change at linebacker

One of the wide-open competitions at Denver Broncos training camp took a twist Sunday when Mario Haggan was promoted from third team to starter at left outside linebacker.

Haggan moved ahead of Darrell Reid and Tim Crowder. Coach Josh McDaniels said a couple of unnamed players were in his doghouse because they “loafed” but noted that Haggan deserved his shot. Haggan was with the first team from the start of practice.

“We’re all fighting for an opportunity to play,” Haggan said. “I guess today was my opportunity to be up and play with the ones.”

Haggan played middle linebacker last season before moving outside this offseason.

“I feel like I’m having a good training camp,” he said.

Marshall’s absence
If McDaniels discussed injuries, then maybe there would be no mystery surrounding Brandon Marshall’s absence. But McDaniels won’t say what is bothering Marshall and refuses to speculate on how long it will sideline the disgruntled receiver. Marshall appeared to hurt his left leg Aug. 2.

McDaniels said he wasn’t worried about Marshall, who is unhappy with his contract, falling behind while he is out.

“When he’s ready to go, he’ll be out here,” McDaniels said. “He’s improving in certain things in terms of his understanding of the offense by being in every meeting.”
