Jefferson looking strong for Falcons

THE GAZETTE

Connor Dietz is getting some repetitions with the first-team offense, but Tim Jefferson has done nothing to indicate he won’t be Air Force’s starting quarterback this season.

Although the coaching staff hasn’t declared a starter, Jefferson looks like a player who is making the natural leap between his sophomore and junior year. He looks especially sharp in the passing game.

“At this point, this year, I’m throwing the ball a lot better than I was at this point last year,” Jefferson said. “I have a better grasp of where everybody is supposed to be, and I have a lot of zip on my ball. I think I have the whole passing game down, and I’m feeling more confident.”

Last year Jefferson threw for 848 yards in 10 games. The coaching staff wants to see him improve his completion percentage (57) last season.

Backup tailback

The Falcons are still figuring out who will back up Asher Clark at tailback, although Cody Getz appears to still have a very slim edge over Darius Jones. Freshmen Marquez Jones and Brent Michaels have also had good moments in camp. Even without Savier Stephens, who likely won’t play this season as he concentrates on becoming a pilot, the Falcons should have plenty of depth.

“We’re all just trying to learn the system, get the hang of football again and hopefully make a splash,” Getz said.

Open letter: Watch us practice

Air Force posted an open letter on Facebook and Twitter from coach Troy Calhoun, inviting fans to come to practice. Practices are open to the public. The varsity usually begins at about 3:45 p.m., and most practices are on fields west of the field house.
