AFA men's basketball: Johnson plays well despite injury
Air Force guard Anwar Johnson didn't practice Thursday or Friday after injuring his right foot in Wednesday's loss to Utah.
But while his foot was "around 75 percent," Johnson played one of his better games in Saturday's 57-54 loss to TCU, scoring a game-high 19 points and grabbing a team-high six rebounds.
Johnson was particularly effective late, making an effort to drive against a TCU team in foul trouble. He scored 11 of the team's final 16 points and went 7-for-7 from the line in the last 7 minutes.
In addition, senior guard/forward Andrew Henke broke out of a slump with 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting, including 2-of-4 from 3-point range.
"I was happy with their play," coach Jeff Reynolds said.
Parker starts
Junior Grant Parker made his first career start, replacing Mike McLain at center.
"Grant had been shooting the ball better in practice than Mike, and we thought with our shooting woes that it might help us," Reynolds said.
Parker scored four points and had five rebounds but went only 1-of-6 from the floor and missed two late free throws. McLain played only 2 minutes.
Extra time
In the waning moments, the clock at Clune Arena stopped momentarily at 3.7 seconds before starting again. Had the clock not stopped, Parker might not have been able to get off his desperation 3-point try.
Etc.
Air Force scored five baskets in the first 6 minutes. It took the Falcons more than 33 minutes to get that many against Utah. ... Air Force's five-game losing streak is the longest in Reynolds' two seasons and its longest since the 2002-03 season. ... The Falcons have lost four in a row at Clune Arena for the first time since the 2000-01 campaign.
