Area colleges: Johnson wins top AFA hoops award

Senior Anwar Johnson was awarded the top honor at the Air Force men's basketball awards banquet. Johnson won the Bob Spear Award, given to the student-athlete that is outstanding in all areas of the academy - academics, athletics and military performance. Johnson also was named the most valuable player for the 2008-09 season.

Johnson led the team with 76 assists and finished second in scoring, averaging 11.9 points.

Fellow senior Hunter Myers won the Falcon Award, given to the player that gives 100 percent regardless of the situation and his place on the team. Myers appeared in just seven career games, all during his freshman season.

• THE AIR FORCE MEN'S GYMNASTICS TEAM concluded its season at the NCAA National Collegiate Gymnastics Championships in Minneapolis. Freshman Jacob Houder posted the Falcons' best individual event finish of the day, placing 22nd on pommel horse. Sophomore Nash Mills finished 11th in the all-around. On still rings, senior Josiah Loeser was 36th, freshman Devin Menefee was 39th and senior Jake Schonig was 41st.

• AIR FORCE DECATHLETE Skylar Morgan placed ninth at California Invitational Multi-Events Meet in Azusa, Calif. The Falcons' Danielle McCarty tallied a 19th-place score in the heptathlon.

• THE COLORADO COLLEGE WOMEN'S LACROSSE TEAM lost 16-8 to Drew University in Madison, N.J. Gioia Garden and Ginny Rider each scored twice for the Tigers (10-3).
