Long tooth of Law coming to Denver

ENGLEWOOD • The oldest secondary in the NFL got even more experience with the addition of cornerback Ty Law on Friday.

Law agreed to terms on a contract with the Broncos, his agent Kevin Poston confirmed, pending a physical. Law has played 14 NFL seasons and turned 35 years old in February. If he becomes one of Denver’s top three cornerbacks, the team’s top five defensive backs will average 32.6 years old.

Poston said he didn’t want to speculate if Law would play against Pittsburgh on Monday or what his role would be. Law’s arrival could mean a demotion for Jack Williams and rookie Alphonso Smith, who have both spent time as Denver’s third cornerback.

Law has shown he can get up to speed quickly. Last year, with seven games left in the season, he was signed by the Jets. He signed on a Monday, played that Thursday against New England, and was a starter a week later.

Law, who hasn’t played all year, could get the chance to practice today, Denver’s final day of preparation before playing Pittsburgh on Monday night.

Law didn’t help the Jets’ pass defense much last year. New York ranked 21st in the NFL against the pass when he signed, allowing 223.4 yards per game. By the end of the season the Jets ranked 29th, allowing 234.5 yards per game.

Like many other offseason acquisitions, Law has ties to the Patriots. He spent 10 seasons in New England, the final four when Broncos coach Josh McDaniels was on the coaching staff.

Law spent 2005 with the New York Jets, 2006 and 2007 with the Chiefs, then finished last season with the Jets. He started six of the Jets’ final seven games.
