Broncos finish training camp, but with work left to be done
Comments 0 | Recommend 0ENGLEWOOD — Broncos coach Josh McDaniels feels his first training camp in Denver went pretty well.
After the final practice concluded, however, he made it clear there is a lot more work to do.
“We haven’t accomplished everything,” he said Thursday. “We’ve worked hard to try to get better, and that’s the schedule we’re on.
“We have a younger football team and a newer group of people together, so hopefully our expectations are that we can continue to improve the entire year. I don’t think we’re going to see our peak for a while here.”
The camp wasn’t always smooth. First-round picks Knowshon Moreno and Robert Ayers missed time because of contract holdouts. Moreno missed more time after suffering a knee injury in the preseason opener.
Quarterback Kyle Orton has been criticized after a couple of rocky performances. And there has been drama surrounding receiver Brandon Marshall, whether with his hip, hamstring injury, legal issues or displeasure with the team.
One of the main concerns for the coaches was getting the team up to speed with a new offensive and defensive scheme. They have said often there is a lot of work to do, but progress was made.
McDaniels ran a physical camp — he said all but four practices were in full pads. He took it easy on his players Thursday, dropping one of two scheduled practices and having the players work in walkthrough speed.
“I commend them on the way they approached training camp and worked,” McDaniels said.
