Broncos' Marshall injures arm in bizarre vacation incident
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Denver Broncos receiver Brandon Marshall appeared in court Monday with a jacket slung over his shoulder, covering part of a large cast and sling on his right arm.
Marshall, whose trial for a DUI charge was pushed back to June 18, couldn't participate in the team's first organized offseason workout Monday because of the injury. His explanation for how it happened is about as unusual as one will find in the NFL.
Marshall said he was on a family vacation last weekend in Orlando, Fla., and woke at 7 a.m. to get a drink of water. He said he stumbled on a McDonald's bag and crashed into the entertainment center and TV.
"My arm went right through the TV," he said.
Marshall, whose cast covered his right hand, said he didn't know how many workouts he would miss and added he needs to be re-evaluated by doctors.
A report on the NFL's Web site detailed Marshall's injuries and said he could miss three months but should be ready for training camp. The report said Marshall severed an artery, vein, nerve and tendons to five muscles in his right forearm and had surgery. The report also said Marshall was wrestling with family members when the incident happened, something Marshall didn't divulge when talking about the incident Monday.
Marshall was at Denver County Court because of an arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence in the early hours of Oct. 22. Last Dec. 18, he entered a plea of not guilty.
New faces
Among the Broncos who left as free agents, were traded or were cut are kicker Jason Elam, receiver Javon Walker, center Chris Myers, linebacker Ian Gold and safety Nick Ferguson. Receiver Rod Smith was put on the reserve/retired list. That made for an odd day at the team facilities as players gathered for the first formal offseason workout.
"Coming in today, I saw a lot of new faces," tight end Tony Scheffler said. "I almost feel like a new guy. And this is going to be my third year."
Moss healthy
Last year's first-round draft pick, defensive end Jarvis Moss, ran some sprints and should return to regular workouts in a week or two. Moss fractured his fibula during a practice last season but said he is feeling better.
"I don't see anything holding me back at all, come camp," said Moss, referring to the start of training camp in July.
Odds and ends
Charles Truncale, the attorney for Broncos defensive tackle Marcus Thomas, said his client's next court appearance stemming from an arrest for possession of a controlled substance was postponed until April 1. The state attorney's office hasn't decided whether to file charges. Thomas will have an arraignment April 1 if he is charged, or the prosecutor will file a disposition notice if no charges are filed....Scheffler, who weighed 265 pounds at this time last year as he tried to bulk up to help his blocking, said he weighs 250 and would like to maintain that weight.
