Broncos get extra day to decide on Marshall

THE GAZETTE

The Denver Broncos were granted an extra day to decide who to remove from the roster to make room for reinstated receiver Brandon Marshall.

An NFL spokesman confirmed that the team received a one-day roster exemption for Marshall, whose suspension for conduct detrimental to the team ended Sunday. The Broncos will have to make one roster move today to reach the 53-player limit.

The coaches must decide if Marshall, who didn’t appear in any preseason games and barely has practiced, is ready to play in next Sunday’s opener at Cincinnati. Denver could use him right away because Jabar Gaffney has a thumb injury.

Sunday’s practice was closed to the media.

Coach Josh McDaniels said Thursday that he likely would talk to Marshall before his first practice.

“I’d love to meet with him, I’m sure that’s going to happen,” McDaniels said. “But then we’re going to get on with our day.”

The team put together its practice squad Sunday. All eight players had been cut by the team after the final preseason game. The squad includes running back Darius Walker, defensive lineman Everette Pedescleaux, tight end Marquez Branson, cornerbacks Tony Carter and D.J. Johnson, offensive lineman Mitch Erickson, receiver Matt Willis and linebacker Braxton Kelley.
