Volkening saves 29 shots, Air Force

WORCESTER, MASS • Penalties could have put Air Force in an early hole Friday night. But Andrew Volkening saved the Falcons.

Holy Cross had a 6-on-4 advantage for the final 83 seconds. But Andrew Volkening saved the Falcons.

Do you detect a pattern here?

Yes, Volkening was at his best, making 29 saves for his second straight shutout and the 14th of the senior’s stellar career. But it took Matt Fairchild’s goal at 13:18 of the third period to give the Falcons a 1-0 victory.

“Volkening turned in a special performance and he had to since we only scored one goal,” Falcons coach Frank Serratore said. “He had five or six big time saves in the game.”

Atlantic Hockey Association-leading Air Force (5-5-1, 5-1-1) outshot Holy Cross 30-29. But Volkening was at his best when the Crusaders (3-5-1, 3-3-1) were on the power play, three times in the first period and at the end of the game.

Fairchild’s goal, his fourth of the season, was a matter of raw speed, beating the defense from the neutral zone and then goalie Thomas Tysowsky.
