Broncos notes: Chargers play for the fumble

ENGLEWOOD • Knowshon Moreno has lost two fumbles this season, and Correll Buckhalter has lost one. Each of the Denver Broncos’ top running backs will need to keep both hands on the ball Monday night.

San Diego defensive coordinator Ron Rivera likes his players to strip the ball, something the Broncos are well aware of. After the first Chargers player gets the ballcarrier, the next few players will be trying to pry the ball away.

“Every team in the league does it, but they do a little better job with it,” Buckhalter said. “As a runner, you have to always be aware. If you’re lackadaisical with the ball, at any point they can get it out.”

The Broncos should get Buckhalter back this week after he missed Sunday’s game. He said his injured ankle was 90 percent, and he was a full participant in practice Thursday.

Fellow running back LaMont Jordan missed his second straight day of practice, although his absence was not injury related, according to the Broncos’ injury report. Jordan was absent because he was attending a funeral, according to his agent Alvin Keels.

Bryant remembered

Former Broncos and University of Colorado running back Bob Anderson said he was sad to hear that fellow CU and NFL running back Cullen Bryant, a Mitchell High graduate, had passed away.

“The thing I remember about him is he came in as a lean, fluid, good-looking athlete who was really a nice guy and dedicated to being a competitive athlete,” Anderson said. “I was really impressed by him. Then you saw him later on with the Los Angeles Rams and he was huge. One of the great things about Cullen is he did great things to develop himself and become a bruiser as a running back.

“He was a quiet, humble guy, and was a warrior on the field. He was a great Buff.”
