SALISBURY, Md. -- Colorado College finally ran into a deficit it couldn’t overcome.
A day after recording the largest comeback in NCAA Division III women’s lacrosse tournament history, the Tigers couldn’t muster a rally against No. 2 Salisbury University in the quarterfinals. CC trailed by four at halftime Sunday and lost 20-11, finishing the season with an 11-6 record.
“We needed to get the ball off the draw and we needed to get possession,” Tigers senior midfielder Robin Harvey said. “They got it off the draw when we needed it and they capitalized on their opportunities. We had some opportunities, had some shots. They had depth, a lot of speed, a lot of skill and we just didn’t execute.”
The Sea Gulls, who improved to 20-1, won 14 of 18 second-half draws after CC had a 9-6 advantage in the first half.
“We wanted to be the second-half team,” Salisbury coach Jim Nestor said. “We knew what they could do. I think we all knew in the back of our minds what they could do after (Saturday).”
The Tigers overcame a 9-2 halftime deficit Saturday to defeat No. 18 Nazareth College 12-11 in sudden-death overtime.
On Sunday, Salisbury keyed on stopping Harvey and senior attacker Kate Fitzgerald. Harvey (38 goals, 14 assists) struggled to get free but did manage a goal and an assist, while Fitzgerald (46, 9) was limited to a goal.
“Kate and I got face-guarded,” Harvey said. “We probably should have done a better job of getting open, but being face-guarded is tough because they are chasing you around.”
The Tigers tried to slow Salisbury’s leading scorer, Sue Ackermann (48, 61), but she still had two goals and five assists.
Salisbury defeated CC 8-5 on March 23 in Colorado Springs. The Sea Gulls also beat the Tigers 15-11 in the 2005 NCAA semifinals.
